Spiritual Truth
Na hi verena verāni,
sammantīdha kudācanaṁ;
Averena ca sammanti,
esa dhammo sanantano.1
Hatred is never appeased by hatred in this world.
By non-hatred alone is hatred appeased.
This is a law2 eternal.3
What would that mean? What does true mean, in general, or in this context?

This is maybe neither here nor there but I just want to point out that dhamma (skt. dharma) is problematic even in the original. IIRC dhamma means variously a. law (inviolable property of the universe), b. teaching, c. phenomenon (subjective arising), and d. thing (!!). Anyway some translators choose "teaching" here. ↩
